How Much Does the Life in the UK Test Cost?

By Priya Anand — Immigration caseworker, 9 years advising settlement applicants

The Life in the UK Test has a standard fee of £50 per attempt, paid when you book through the official GOV.UK service. It's one of the smaller costs of settling in the UK — but a failed attempt means paying it again, so it's worth getting right first time.

What affects the price

  • Standard slots cost £50.
  • Some slots cost more. Last-minute and out-of-hours bookings at some centres carry a higher fee. If you're flexible on timing, booking a standard slot well in advance keeps you at £50.

Always check the price shown in the booking service before you pay — the official service is the only place that sets it.

Cancelling and refunds

You can normally get a refund if you cancel at least 3 days before your appointment. Cancel later than that, or miss the test, and you'll usually lose the fee. Check the terms in your booking confirmation.

Retakes cost the same again

There's no discount for a second attempt — each one costs the full fee. That's the strongest financial argument for booking only once you're consistently passing practice tests. Our guide on what happens after your result covers retakes.

The test is only one cost

Your Indefinite Leave to Remain or citizenship application has its own, much larger Home Office fee, which changes periodically. Check current application fees on GOV.UK when you plan your budget.
