Life in the UK Test Results: What Happens After You Pass?
By Priya Anand — Immigration caseworker, 9 years advising settlement applicants
You'll usually get your Life in the UK Test result at the test centre, right after you finish. Knowing that in advance takes a lot of the tension out of the appointment — there's no anxious wait by the letterbox for days afterwards.
When do you get your result?
The centre tells you whether you've passed or not passed once the test ends. If you pass, keep the pass reference or confirmation somewhere safe — you'll normally need those details when you complete an Indefinite Leave to Remain or British citizenship application.
The test provider and GOV.UK set the current process, so follow the instructions you're handed on the day. Don't rely on old screenshots of certificates or booking emails floating around online — I've seen applicants confuse themselves badly that way.
Does a Life in the UK Test pass expire?
Always let the official guidance be your final word here, but a Life in the UK Test pass has generally been usable without a fixed expiry date for eligible future applications. That said, your immigration application can still carry its own timing rules, evidence requirements, and eligibility conditions.
And passing the test doesn't, on its own, grant settlement or citizenship — it confirms one part of the knowledge requirement, no more.
What if you don't pass?
If you don't hit the required 18 out of 24, you can normally book another test. Before you rebook, though, work out what actually went wrong:
- Were there handbook chapters you never covered?
- Did you run out of time?
- Were you leaning on unverified online question lists?
- Did nerves make you rush questions you knew?
Spend your next study period fixing the cause rather than just re-sitting the same mock over and over. BritPass lets you practise by topic and read the explanations, so a wrong answer becomes the start of a revision plan instead of a mystery.
Prepare for a stronger next attempt
Our Life in the UK Test study guide lays out a practical revision structure. Once your timed mock scores sit consistently above the 75% pass mark, book a fresh slot through the official GOV.UK service.
