What Is the Life in the UK Test Pass Mark? (And How to Beat It)

By Priya AnandImmigration caseworker, 9 years advising settlement applicants

The single number every candidate wants confirmed before booking is the pass mark. For the Life in the UK Test it's 75% — and here's exactly what that translates to on the day.

The pass mark in plain numbers

  • The test has 24 questions.
  • You need 18 correct to pass.
  • That's 75%, so you can miss up to 6 questions and still walk out with a pass.
  • You have 45 minutes, which is roughly 1 minute 50 seconds per question — plenty of time.

There's no partial credit and no negative marking. Each question is either right or wrong, and your final score is simply the count of correct answers out of 24.

Do you find out your score?

You won't be given a percentage breakdown. At an approved test centre you're told whether you passed or not shortly after finishing — the result is pass/fail, not a detailed report card. That's another reason to aim well above 18 rather than hoping you scraped it.

Why "just passing" is the wrong target

Six wrong answers sounds like a comfortable buffer, but three things quietly eat into it on test day:

  1. Nerves. Even well-prepared candidates misread a question or two under pressure.
  2. Trick wording. Some questions hinge on a single word — "must" versus "can", a date, a name.
  3. Topic luck. You don't choose which parts of the handbook come up, so a weak chapter can cost you several questions at once.

Candidates who pass first time almost always score above 90% on their mock tests in the days before booking. That cushion is what turns a nervy attempt into a routine one.

How to build a safe margin

  • Take full 24-question mock tests under a timer, not casual quizzes.
  • Track which chapters you miss most and revise those specifically.
  • Don't book the real test until you're clearing 22 out of 24 consistently.

BritPass mock tests match the real 24-question, 45-minute, 75%-to-pass format exactly, so the number you see in practice is the number that counts on the day.
