How Much Does Canadian Citizenship Cost?

By Marc Tremblay — Former citizenship judge assistant, Ontario

Canadian citizenship fees are paid when you apply, and the test itself doesn't cost extra. Here's what adults and minors pay at the time of writing.

Adult applicants

For an adult (18 or over) the total is $653, made up of:

  • a $530 processing fee, and
  • a $123 right of citizenship fee, which rose to that amount on 31 March 2026.

The right of citizenship fee is refunded if your application is refused or withdrawn before you're granted citizenship. The processing fee generally isn't refunded once IRCC has started processing.

Minors

Applicants under 18 pay a $100 processing fee and no right of citizenship fee.

Is the test extra?

No. If you're invited to take the citizenship test, there's no separate charge — it's part of your application. The costs to plan for are your time and preparation.
