How Hard Is the Canadian Citizenship Test?

By Marc Tremblay — Former citizenship judge assistant, Ontario

The applicants I saw who struggled rarely found the questions conceptually difficult. They struggled because they'd studied one part of Discover Canada well and skipped the rest.

What makes it challenging

  • Breadth. Questions can come from any part of the official guide — history, how Parliament works, the provinces and territories, rights and responsibilities, symbols.
  • A demanding pass mark. You need 15 out of 20 (75%). Five wrong answers is the limit.
  • Specific facts. Dates, names and "which of these" questions reward precise knowledge.

What makes it manageable

  • One official source. The test is based on the Discover Canada study guide, so there's a defined amount to learn.
  • A known format. Twenty questions in 30 minutes. See the pass mark and format guide.
  • Recall improves quickly with practice.

How to know you're ready

Aim to clear 15 out of 20 comfortably across several different practice sets, not just once. Use the free Canadian citizenship practice tests, the sample questions and answers, and a structured Discover Canada study plan.
