Canadian Citizenship Test Results: When You Get Them and What Happens Next

By Marc Tremblay — Former citizenship judge assistant, Ontario

Waiting for a result is often harder than the test itself. Here's what to expect.

How you get your result

IRCC communicates your result through official channels — usually by updating your application in your online account and/or by letter. Timings vary, so don't rely on what a friend experienced; follow what IRCC tells you. IRCC's citizenship test page has the current process.

You need at least 15 out of 20 to pass.

If you pass

Passing the test is one requirement, not the whole decision. If you meet all the other requirements, the next step is usually an invitation to a citizenship ceremony, where you take the Oath of Citizenship and become a Canadian citizen.

If you don't pass

It's usually not the end of your application — IRCC normally gives eligible applicants another opportunity. Our guide on what happens if you fail the citizenship test explains the usual next steps and how to prepare differently.

Getting ready for a second attempt

Go back to Discover Canada, focus on your weakest topics, and practise until you're comfortably above 15 out of 20 on several different sets. Try the free practice tests and the sample questions and answers.

CanadaPass is independent and not affiliated with IRCC. Always follow the instructions IRCC sends you.
