How Much Does the Einbürgerungstest Cost?

By Lena Vogel — Integration course tutor, 8 years, Berlin

Good news first: the Einbürgerungstest is one of the cheapest steps on the way to German citizenship.

The test fee

Taking the Einbürgerungstest costs €25, and the fee is the same across Germany. You pay it when you register with the test centre — often a Volkshochschule (VHS) or another approved provider. Our guide on how to book the Einbürgerungstest covers registration.

Retakes

If you don't pass, you can take the test again as often as you need — but each attempt is a new booking with the fee paid again. See what happens if you fail.

The naturalisation fee is separate

The €25 covers only the test. Your application for naturalisation (Einbürgerung) has its own fee, paid to your local naturalisation authority. At the time of writing that's €255 for an adult, with a reduced fee for children naturalised with a parent. Check the current amount with your Einbürgerungsbehörde.

Your certificate

When you pass, you receive a certificate — usually by post a few weeks after the test. It doesn't expire, so there's no need to retake it if your application takes a while. More in our guide to Einbürgerungstest results.

Make one booking count: practise with the free Einbürgerungstest practice tests first. Fees are set by the authorities and can change. GermanPass is an independent study app.
