Einbürgerungstest Study Guide: What to Learn and How to Pass

Here's the thing I tell every group on day one: the Einbürgerungstest is one of the fairest exams you'll ever sit. Every question is published in advance in the official BAMF catalogue, so there are no surprises — only the question of whether you've put in the practice.

What you're actually studying

The test is 33 questions in 60 minutes, and you need 17 correct to pass. Those 33 are drawn from a public catalogue of 300 general questions plus 10 questions for your federal state (Bundesland) — 30 general questions and 3 state ones on the day. Because the catalogue is fixed and public, your whole job is recall: seeing each question often enough that the right answer is automatic.

Topics that deserve extra revision

Over the years, the questions my students find hardest cluster in a few areas:

• How Germany is governed — the Bundestag, the Bundesrat, elections, and the separation of powers
• History and responsibility — the Nazi era, division, and reunification, which carry wording people misread when they rush
• The Basic Law (Grundgesetz) — rights, freedoms, and the free democratic basic order
• Your Bundesland — the 3 state questions are easy marks if you've practised the right set, and easy to neglect

The politics and history questions are where careful reading pays off. Slow down on anything with "not" or "which of these is forbidden" in it.

A three-week plan that works

• Week 1: Work through the general catalogue in blocks of 30–40 questions. Don't aim for a score yet — just meet every question once and read the explanation for the ones you miss.
• Week 2: Focus your weak themes, and start your Bundesland's 10 state questions. Redo the questions you got wrong until they're reliable.
• Week 3: Full timed mocks, 33 questions in 60 minutes, until 17 is your floor rather than your target.
