Einbürgerungstest Results: When Does the Certificate Arrive?

By Lena Vogel — Integration course tutor, 8 years, Berlin

One thing surprises almost everyone in my groups: you walk out of the Einbürgerungstest without knowing your score.

How long the result takes

Your answer sheet is evaluated centrally by the BAMF, not at the test centre. The result and — if you passed — your certificate then arrive by post, typically a few weeks later. Many people report around four to eight weeks, depending on the centre and time of year.

What you receive

  • If you pass (17 or more out of 33), you get a certificate confirming it. Keep it safe — you'll need it for your naturalisation application.
  • If you don't pass, you're told the result by post too, so you know where you stand before rebooking.

The certificate doesn't expire, so it stays valid however long your application takes.

If you didn't pass

You can retake the test — there's no limit on attempts, though each one is a new booking and fee. Use your result to see how far off you were, then read what happens if you fail the Einbürgerungstest for a plan.

Next step: your application

With your certificate, you can complete your naturalisation application with your local Einbürgerungsbehörde. Check the current requirements with the BAMF.
