How Hard Is the Einbürgerungstest?

By Lena Vogel — Integration course tutor, 8 years, Berlin

I tell every group the same thing: this is one of the fairest exams you'll ever sit. That doesn't mean you can skip preparation — but it does mean preparation works.

Why it's manageable

  • The questions are public. Every question comes from the official BAMF catalogue, so nothing on the day should be new.
  • The pass mark is forgiving. You need 17 out of 33 — just over half.
  • There's time. Sixty minutes for 33 multiple-choice questions is generous.

For the full format, see how many questions are on the Einbürgerungstest.

What still catches people out

  • Negative questions. Wording like "which is not…" or "what is forbidden…" flips the right answer. Read those twice.
  • The state questions. Three questions are about your federal state. They're easy marks if you practise them — and easy to forget.
  • Politics and history. The Basic Law, the Bundestag and Bundesrat, and German history carry precise facts worth learning properly.
  • Old or invented question lists. Practise only material tied to the current catalogue.

How to know you're ready

Aim for 17 to be your floor, not your target, across several full practice sets. Use the free Einbürgerungstest practice tests, the sample questions and answers and our study guide.

Confirm current details with the BAMF. GermanPass is an independent study app.
