Canadian Citizenship Test Eligibility: Who Needs to Take the Test?

The Canadian citizenship test is one step in the wider application process. It checks your knowledge of Canada — history, geography, government, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens — but it's rarely the only thing IRCC is looking at.
Who normally takes the citizenship test?
IRCC generally asks applicants aged 18 to 54 to show adequate knowledge of Canada and, where it applies, language ability. The process can shift with your circumstances, so the notice you get from IRCC is the document to follow — not a general rule you read somewhere.
Applicants outside that age range often don't sit the written test, but they still have to meet the other citizenship requirements that apply to their file.
The test isn't the whole application
Getting invited to take the test doesn't mean every other requirement is already signed off — that's a point I had to make often. IRCC keeps assessing things like physical presence, tax filing where it's required, and any other eligibility conditions right alongside the test.

How to prepare if you're invited
The official Discover Canada guide is the backbone of the test. Start there, then use practice questions to surface the gaps. The written test is 20 questions and needs 15 correct, so keep practising until your scores sit above the pass mark reliably.
Focus on:
- Canada's history and geography
- Federal, provincial, and municipal government
- Voting and civic responsibilities
- Rights, freedoms, and national symbols
