How Many Questions Are on the Canadian Citizenship Test? (2026 Guide)
By Marc Tremblay — Former citizenship judge assistant, Ontario
If you've received your invitation to take the Canadian citizenship test, the first thing to nail down is the format: how many questions, and how many you need to get right.
The short answer
- 20 questions in total
- 15 correct to pass (that's 75%)
- 30 minutes to complete it
- Multiple choice and true/false, based on the official Discover Canada guide
Every question comes straight from Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship — the free study guide published by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). There's nothing on the test that isn't in that guide.
What the questions cover
The 20 questions are drawn from across the whole guide, including:
- The rights and responsibilities of citizenship
- Canada's history and the people who shaped it
- How Canadians govern themselves — federal, provincial, and municipal
- Canadian symbols, geography, and regions
- Voting and how elections work
You won't know which topics come up, so being comfortable across the entire guide beats memorising a few chapters and hoping.
How the test is given
Most applicants take the test online or in person, depending on how IRCC schedules it. Either way it's the same structure: 20 questions, 30 minutes, 15 to pass. If English or French isn't your first language, remember the questions are written in plain language — but the wording still rewards careful reading.
How to make sure you get 15+
The pass mark leaves room for five mistakes, but the strongest candidates don't lean on that. People who pass first time are usually scoring 17 or 18 out of 20 on mock tests before their appointment, which absorbs the odd nervous slip on the day.
CanadaPass mock tests mirror the real 20-question, 30-minute, 75%-to-pass format, so by the time you sit the official test the structure already feels familiar.
Before your appointment
Study from the official source and confirm current details here: Discover Canada / citizenship test — Canada.ca. Then work through full mock tests until 15 out of 20 feels comfortable — and aim higher.
