How to Book the Canadian Citizenship Test: Step by Step

By Marc TremblayFormer citizenship judge assistant, Ontario

One of the most common questions we hear is "how do I book my Canadian citizenship test?" The honest answer surprises people: you don't book it — Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invites you. Here's how the process actually works.

Step 1: Submit your citizenship application

The test isn't a standalone booking. It's part of your overall citizenship application. First you submit a complete application and IRCC confirms they've received it. Nothing test-related happens until your application is in the system and being processed.

Step 2: Wait for your invitation

If you're between 18 and 54 years old, you'll need to take the test. Once IRCC has reviewed your application, they send an invitation with your test date, time, and format (online or in person). This isn't something you schedule on demand — the date comes to you.

Processing times vary, so the gap between applying and being invited can be weeks or months. Use that waiting period to prepare rather than assuming you'll get warning at the last minute.

Step 3: Confirm and prepare

When the invitation arrives:

  • Check the details — date, time, and whether it's online or in person.
  • Follow any instructions for ID or technical setup if it's an online test.
  • Study Discover Canada, the official free guide the entire test is based on.

The test itself is 20 questions in 30 minutes, with 15 correct needed to pass (75%). Everything on it comes from Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship.

Step 4: Take the test (and what if you don't pass)

If you don't pass the first time, it isn't the end of your application — IRCC typically offers another opportunity. Still, the calmer path is to walk in ready the first time by practising until the format feels routine.

CanadaPass mock tests match the real 20-question, 30-minute format, so when your invitation date arrives you're rehearsing the exact test, not guessing at it.

Always use the official source

Application steps, eligibility, and timelines are set by IRCC and can change. Confirm everything here before you act: Apply for citizenship — Canada.ca. Then start working through full mock tests so you're ready the moment your invitation lands.
